Valencia sits at the center of the Spanish Mediterranean coast, overlooking the Gulf of Valencia on the Costa del Azahar. It is very much an up and coming visitor destination for both tourist and business traveler. Following a period of investment during the mid 1990's, historic landmarks were restored and exciting new ventures opened, making Valencia a perfect mix of old and new with many attractions, restaurants, bars and places to stay. Valencia boutique hotels, traditional festivals, Spain's most impressive museum, great shopping - it is well worth a visit.
The most impressive sight in Valencia has to be the City of Arts and Sciences. The futuristic building was designed by architect Santiago Calatrava and was inaugurated in 1996. It is constructed on part of the old river bed and covers a vast area, housing five different spaces open to the public. Each space offers a different kind of experience and the aim is to bring museum visiting bang up to date with entertainment-based educational experiences. There are four main buildings, each an architectural wonder.
L'Hemisferic houses an IMAX Movie Theater and Planetarium and showcases science and technology. L'Oceanografic is a marine park and includes the aquarium, the largest in Europe. El Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia is dedicated to the arts and has an auditorium given over to opera and other performances. Last but not least is the Museo de las Ciencias Principe Felipe which houses science based exhibitions. The outdoor space is called L'Umbracle and acts as the entrance to the complex and is made up of arches, plants and pools creating peaceful areas where visitors can relax. The presence of the beautiful blue water reflecting the remarkable architecture is certainly eye-catching both during the day and at night time and the complex has made Valencia one of the principle tourist destinations in Spain.
Alongside this ultra modern attraction are other older places of interest. The Cathedral sits in Placa de la Reina and was built in 1262. It is a stunning example of Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque architectural styles. Visitors can climb the steps of the Micalet Tower to enjoy a spectacular view across the city. The Torres de Serranos are the impressive city gates which lead into the old quarter of the city where visitors can enjoy wandering around or sitting in the squares and by the fountains and statues. Being on the coast there are also beaches in Valencia and it is Spain's biggest port serving container ships as well as ferrying passengers across to the popular Balearic Islands. Valencia has also played host to the Americas Cup.
Visitors looking for traditional Spanish culture can visit the Bullfighting Museum or indulge in some paella valenciana in one of the many restaurants in the city. There are also places to shop for authentic Spanish gifts and food such as in the Silk Market and the Central Market or in the old quarter. Any chic modern city will have plenty of malls, superstores and high street shopping and Valencia delivers on this score too.
Those wishing to escape the city for a few hours can relax in several parks and gardens including the botanical gardens, which are home to 1000 different species of plant and tree.
There are two main festivals in Valencia, the Tomatina held in the third week of August in Bunos when the world famous tomato fighting takes place and the annual Falles which involves five days of partying, processions and fireworks. Both show the colorful side of Valencia. Once a year Valencia plays host to the rich and glamorous Formula One Grand Prix crowd with its exciting street circuit.
Staying in Valencia boutique hotels are an ideal choice. Stylish rooms in classic Spanish buildings in the heart of the city offer easy access to the sights and are close to restaurants and bars for enjoying the night life. There are also luxury rooms with views of the city or the Mediterranean with balconies and outdoor pools, which cater for both the tourist and the seasoned business traveler.
Imagine being in Valencia boutique hotels, streets filled with racing cars or parades, amazing architecture from past and present, a very sophisticated destination indeed.
